Typology and functions of beginnings and endings in traditional instrumental music (based on Adyghe folk tunes)

Abstract

The beginnings and endings of Adyghe instrumental music are examined as examples of their “mirror reflection” in relation to each other and their “looped unity”. The purpose of this article is to classify the beginnings and endings of Adyghe tunes, and to determine their structural-compositional and textural-rhythmic features. This is the first analysis of key sections of Adyghe instrumental music, which not only provides novel information but also opens a new framework for studying the instrumental music of other peoples of the North Caucasus. As a result, the authors identify specific characteristics of Adyghe instrumental music related to the beginnings and endings of the tunes, providing their detailed description. The authors distinguish several types of final longs (elongated final notes): middle and final; and conduct a morphological analysis of initial and final longs. In conclusion, their important cultural function is articulated. Longs mark the Adyghe musical mentality; characterize two main dance tunes – zafak and kafu; connect the past and present, ancient popular instruments with the modern accordion, and provide musicians with the opportunity to showcase their talents and express traditional culture.
