The evolution of artistic form in contemporary animation: the role of artificial intelligence in shaping visual style

Abstract

Contemporary animation art constitutes a synthesis of traditional artistic methods and innovative approaches, including those based on artificial intelligence (hereinafter – AI). These developments not only transform the modes of creating animated works, but also instigate a re-evaluation of artistic form in animation, as well as the concept of authorship, necessitating profound theoretical reflection. The purpose of this study is to identify the novel opportunities that AI technologies afford animation artists and directors. The scholarly novelty of this work resides in a comprehensive understanding of the influence of AI technologies on the artistic form and visual aesthetics of animation art within the context of contemporary art historical discourse. In contrast to extant studies, which predominantly focus either on the technological aspects of AI application in animation or on individual artistic projects, this research offers an interdisciplinary approach, integrating art historical analysis, historical-cultural context, and critical technological assessment. Despite the burgeoning interest in the application of AI in art, the theme of its influence on artistic form in animation remains insufficiently explored. Consequently, the work facilitates a comprehension of not only the current shifts in the artistic form of animation, but also its future prospects, rendering the study a significant contribution to the investigation of contemporary animation art.
