Allocronism as a feature of diary writing crossing the border: Walter Benjamin's “Moscow Diary” and Sergei Prokofiev's personal diary

Abstract

The article is devoted to two diary texts from 1927: the "Moscow Diary" by Walter Benjamin and the personal diary of Sergei Prokofiev. The main purpose of this study is to identify the presence and mechanisms of functioning of allochronic practices in diary writing. The article analyzes how the images of Moscow, constructed by the authors on the eve of their arrival in the city, and the reality recorded in the diaries relate to each other. Both authors visit Moscow at the same time: in the winter of 1927. The scientific novelty of this article lies in the interdisciplinary intention of using the research apparatus of anthropology and historiosophy in cultural research, which makes it possible to identify and demonstrate a non-classical format of allochranic optics, which differs from the one described earlier by Johannes Fabian. As a result of the study, it was pointed out that time inequality can be used not only as an instrument of the "politics of time", expressed in the a priori research position of an anthropologist, but also as an emerging optics of a diarist aimed at acquiring historical subjectivity. The conclusion of the article demonstrates how Walter Benjamin aspired to see the "city of the future," but encountered the city of the "past past." Sergei Prokofiev, on the contrary, expecting to see a regression, records a modern European city in his diary.
