Prospects for the application of artificial intelligence technologies in virtual museums of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the potential and limitations of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in virtual museums of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The article analyzes the existing definitions of the concept of “virtual museum”, which has evolved with technological progress and cultural perception of this progress, and highlights the key stages in the evolution of virtual museums – from a “web showcase” to an “intelligent environment”. The directions of AI integration into museum practices are considered and classified in three areas: intelligent collection processing, personalization of interaction, and expansion of expositional capabilities. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, based on a comparative analysis of specific cases (the “Virtual Yakutia” project, Yakutsk; the Virtual Museum of Languages of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Yakutsk; the Virtual Museum of the Yakut State United Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of the North named after Yem. Yaroslavsky, Yakutsk), realistic prospects are identified for the first time, and a set of regional restrictions on AI implementation specific to northern territories with a unique cultural heritage is revealed. As a result of the study, it was established that, despite the significant transformative potential of AI technologies, its implementation in museums of Yakutia is constrained not only by general resource, personnel, and technological limitations, but also by specific problems, such as the linguistic difficulties of digitizing agglutinative languages and the ethical risks of representing sacred elements of culture. The key perspective for museums of Yakutia is the transition from interactive presentation to the phase of an intelligent environment, the achievement of which requires a focused overcoming of the identified limitations.
