The space of the Chinese landscape in the works of R. V. Khalilov

Abstract

The study aims to provide a detailed description of the features of Chinese landscape depiction in the illustrations by the Soviet Russian artist R. V. Khalilov (1941-2006). The scientific novelty of the article lies in identifying the features of the embodiment of the Chinese landscape in the landscape illustrations by the artist R. V. Khalilov for Chinese fairy tales, based on the theory of traditional Chinese painting, characterizing the means of integrating Chinese and Russian art, and deepening the cultural connotation of the landscape space. The article provides a detailed analysis of one of the techniques characteristic of Chinese painting – the technique of “air space”, which forms the depth of the work, the “multi-layered” image, and its infinity. In R. V. Khalilov’s creative legacy, there are illustrations for three books of Chinese fairy tales, in which the unique interpretation of Chinese landscape space has both artistic value and significance for cultural communication. The study revealed that Khalilov’s depictions of the Chinese landscape are characterized by the simplicity of traditional Chinese monochrome landscape painting. The natural landscapes include elements of Chinese culture, such as mountains, waterfalls, plants, and animals. Many of these elements have symbolic significance in the context of Chinese aesthetics. Additionally, there are several elements of Chinese architecture, such as the gates of a Buddhist temple and the walls of a house. All of these elements in R. V. Khalilov’s illustrations not only reveal the meaning of the text, but also become a cultural space for Russian readers to explore Chinese art and traditions.
